October 1st

Well guys I just wanted to share some info with you.  For the past week I’ve been selling around 90 copies per day for the Gambit and around 50+ average for the Who.

Here are my month end figures.

Admiral Who:

Total Sales – 1019

Daily Sales – 68

Admiral’s Gambit:

Total Sales – 1305

Daily Sales – 110

Now the daily sales was the sales for the 30th, not an average.  This is essentially a copy of an e-mail I shared with my brother.

Another bit of info.  Here are the cut and past figures for the past two weeks from amazon.

Right now we’re working on a Novella we’re busy writing and thinking about launching for free sometime in november.  And come out with another main line book in January.  Also thinking to bump the 1st book to 2.99 when the novella comes out.

Any thoughts?

Just to let you know, I just finished reading Admiral Who and Admiral Gambit.
I _liked_ them. You are solely responsible for two sleepless night, in which I was devouring the books and seriously pissed at there not being another book.

Looking forward for the next one!

I think you would be smart to bump up the price. Michael Stackpole over on his blog stormwolf.com talks about charging $1.00/hour of reading. So. 60 page book is a buck, 120 is $2.00 and so on. While I personally don’t want to pay more, your books are a steal at current prices. You write an engaging story and $3 to $4 is not unreasonable.

Have read them both twice now, waiting on the third. Or the movie. Love the humor and the adventure. Yes you could charge more for the first, second, and third. I would be willing to take out a loan for the 6th I’m sure. I can say “I knew you when…” You can travel soon. I’m so happy for you. I also saw the “authors info on Amazon. Great picture of the family. You’re living the dream.

First Luv the books, allready in my comfort reads list.
2nd Map Please… I am picturing this so far in sol’s arm of the milky way galaxy, with the Spine being the thick center of the arm, and sol system outwards of most of the focus. (galactic arms are huge.)

What I can’t see is where the admiral’s gambit is in relation to the ice queens home planet; especially since the admiral’s poisonous cousin did not recieve a report on it when she entered the system, and never found it in the week she visited.
and is that spot really safe from the bugs, who travel in the old fashioned straight line from place to place instead of jumping?

Well in regard to your question, here are my thoughts. In regard to the first book only, keep it at 99 cents permanently and then after book four or five give it away for free. The first book is the proverbial “honey-pot” and if it eventually becomes free it will be the hook used to acquire new followers. I became a fan and avid follower due to book #1. Once you attain the recognition you are striving for (and you certainly will) all the rest of the series can be jacked up to 4.99 each. I think B.V.Larson did something similar as did Brian S. Pratt. Now they are both so well known and so prolific in their own literary worlds they can pretty much charge what they want and people are willing to pay for it. Just my thoughts, and good luck either way.

I mostly agree with Gene Rick Maze. However, I’ve quit buying B.V. Larson books because I can find equal quality for less than 5.99. However, for your books and the books by Darren Humphries (To Infinity…) I would probably be willing to pay 4.99. However, 3.99 is easier to get by the wife–considering how many books I buy. On the other hand, with the quality of your characters and story, your line of diminishing returns may be at 4.99 or even 5.99, but at around 5.99 I have to start justifying the expense to the family CFO.

    Joshua,

I so far have really enjoyed your books. I am in agreement with Richard M. I too stopped reading b.v. Larson because he went to5.99. I personally will not purchase a book over 4.99. Not when there are too many good indie writers selling their stuff at $2.99 and less. I think that you should either keep first book price at $.99 or make it free. I have ended up buying many books in a series because of that reason. My only personal complaint with your books is the character development is taking way too long. Too many characters we don’t know even after two books in.

    Now get back to work!

Thanks for the advice guys. Right now the only way to make an amazon book permanently free, at least according to the support department, is to put your book up for free somewhere else. Then they will price match you to the other side. Pretty weird huh?

Also: not enough character development? That’s something I haven’t been accused of yet. hahahahahah

First and foremost, I love the books! I also love that they are long, so many kindle books are ridiculously short. .99 cents is fine, no need to give it away free. Pricewise, my personal sweet spot is $3.99, I will pay that for book three.

A map in the “front cover” is always a good idea, like Dennis McCracken said, though I don’t think the book has let us know where admirals gambit is yet, though you may have said something in the blog. Maps always help me get into the story, and connect all the dots, like are all the spineward sectors on the rim in a thin line, or are a few deeper in, thickening the spine. I like maps, sorry if I rambled a bit.

One question for the blog though, how does amazon treat you? Do they take most of what we pay, or do you get to keep a good chunk of it?

Thanks again for the magnificent novels.

They give me 35% of Admiral Who so I make a cool 0.33 Cents per copy, and they give me 70% of Admiral’s Gambit so roughly 2.00 bucks after you factor in the one time download fee per each book which is around 12 cents.

Then the goverment is going to take a wet bite out of it later on. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30% depending on how successful I get.
